I did almost cry reading this but it is really full of great insight.

Also “Before reading about Lawrence, I had a pervasive feeling that I was an aberrant life form, like an alien creature that just so happened to have the physical appearance of a human. Then I read about him and realized that wasn’t the case.” — I actually had a special interest in anthropology in high school but then when I started college it was the history of ideas that grabbed me, this is like 90% of the reason lol.

I do think girls have a different time trajectory, often- my most painful social rejection eras were middle elementary, before I learned to mask decently (more from Sweet Valley twins style reading and probably TV looking back). I did get some bullying and outsidering from middle school girls but had a little social group with my mother hen bestie and a couple of slightly nerdy guys.

Masking is like a lot of things I think—effective when one is at least a little aware one is deploying skills to connect, can backfire when no awareness of what is happening. I often over invested in performances I could pull off only in brief interactions and then it would start to kind of blip off and on or show around the edges as I rapidly wore out and I would wonder why people cooled on me so much.

Parts of this are far too relatable and made me cringe; parts of it are quite sad actually (I mean sad in the literal sense not in the 90s sense), but thank you for sharing in such detail.
