undergraduates and early graduate students interested in pure math. here is a proposal by 25 of the heroes of your field. i ask you sincerely. on your conscience, as an intellectual, if not as a mathematician. do you agree with this declaration?

hard to argue in light of recent events that the current state of affairs isnt detrimental to the science and community. are they opposing progress or recognizing that the benchmarks in place track something other than progress?
Yes since like you said multiple times math is not the bottleneck so if it not the bottleneck why the rush then? If it is a bottleneck then was all you said just bait? It’s like having a race to take the most photos or paint the most pictures
nobody is waiting for the pure mathematicians because their work is useless. but i feel deeply sorry for their students. they don't deserve what field leadership is currently doing to them
it's a little shocking to me that you guys are all just parroting that one blog post. I read it too, I just think it's bullshit
nothing is stopping you from doing the understanding and problem generation and idea generation after the solution is generated. this should be obvious. it's a little incredible to me the degree to which none of you are actually thinking through this
i mean, if the only thing the AIs can do is give inscrutable proofs for problems and adjoin a lean certificate, what does that actually provide for us in the idea/problem generation front? maybe we could talk to the AIs about their ideas, but it seems like they themselves often don't understand the proof, let alone humans

1. knowing the answer can easily have positive value for understanding something, since you don't try to prove a statement that isn't true 2. better yet the AI has some understanding of the answer
