Yesterday, I was giving an intro talk to our dept's new PhD students. Technical things aside, my number 1 suggestion has remained the same over the years: Treat your PhD like a job. - Avoid 1.5h lunch and three tea breaks. - Avoid gossiping and loitering at work. - Lab at 9 am
I doubt all those things are really possible. Infact I believe, you are not doing a good PhD unless you have sleepless nights. Definitely just working on your thesis is possible if you follow a 9-6 schedule, but a good PhD which involves exploring, colabs, etc needs extra hours
It's not one-size-fits-all. One of the very, very best PhD students I worked with (who's a very successful professor now) came in at 7am, left at 3pm, didn't chit-chat, and did stunning work. I was pretty much the opposite. I worked out okay too.
I remember my undergrad advisor scheduled a meeting with me at 10. This was early back then. I rushed to the building and he rushed, bleary eyed, too. He goes as we stand there, who the fuck scheduled this so early? “You!”
