A few days ago, I shared the World Bank’s summary of the results of the PISA for Schools assessment conducted in 171 Salvadoran public schools participating in our education pilot. Since then, I have seen some legitimate questions about what these results mean, as well as some claims about what they supposedly don’t mean. So let’s be very precise. First, what we NEVER claimed: 1. We never claimed these results represent the national average. They don’t. This was not the national PISA assessment. It was PISA for Schools, conducted specifically in the 171 public schools participating in our pilot program. That is precisely why my original post said: “These are the results of our pilot program, which includes AI tutors and has been running in 171 public schools for just over a year.” A pilot is, by definition, not the entire country. 2. We never claimed that these 171 schools were a statistically representative sample of every school in El Salvador. They weren’t selected randomly from all Salvadoran schools. They were selected to participate in the pilot because they were schools where the program could initially be implemented more easily: they had certain basic infrastructure and connectivity requirements, and school communities capable and willing to implement a new educational model. That creates a selection effect, and it should be acknowledged. But there is an important distinction here. These schools were NOT selected because their students had exceptional academic results. They were not our “best schools.” Not even close. We didn’t search the country for the highest-performing schools or students and then test them. They are normal Salvadoran public schools, urban and rural, in different parts of the country, serving ordinary Salvadoran families. And the characteristics that made implementation easier: connectivity, infrastructure, trained teachers and willingness to adopt the program, are also things that can be replicated in other schools. They are not innate characteristics of the students. We can install connectivity. We can improve infrastructure. We can train teachers. We can provide the same technology. We can deploy the same educational tools. In fact, that is exactly what we are doing. 3. These results also do NOT prove that AI tutors, by themselves, caused the improvement, although we believe they are a MAJOR part of these results. Our pilot is broader than that. It includes changes in teaching, support for teachers and principals, educational materials, monitoring and evaluation, technology, and AI tools, among other interventions. Our AI tutors and learning platforms are being developed with , , and support from I Hate Flying Bugs. And the broader transformation of our education system is being supported by the , , and . All of these interventions can also affect student motivation and engagement. But that distinction matters: if students become more motivated BECAUSE of the program, that is not necessarily a flaw in the program or an explanation that somehow invalidates the results. It may be one of the ways the program works. The same applies to teachers. For example, the implementation of the AI tutors, including the requirement for teachers to log in and out of the system, coincided with teacher attendance in these schools increasing from 76% to 97%. If the program causes teachers to attend school more consistently, and that in turn helps students learn more, that is not an advantage that disappears when we scale the program. It is potentially part of the intervention itself. Of course, to scientifically isolate the causal effect of AI tutors, teacher attendance, student motivation, technology, training, or any other individual component would require a different experimental design. Now, what DO these results tell us? 1. They tell us that 1,198 students in 171 ordinary Salvadoran public schools… 🧵1/2👇🏼

honestly, i keep thinking about this result and it's just absurd. in the 2022 PISA, el salvador scored 343 in math, 365 in reading, and 373 in science near the bottom of PISA, close to guatemala and dominican republic now the country has developed a program for education x.com/nayibbukele/st…

Now, what DO these results tell us? 1. They tell us that 1,198 students in 171 ordinary Salvadoran public schools participating in this program were independently assessed using an internationally comparable instrument. And their results in reading, mathematics and science were
As the reform reaches more and more schools, national assessments will allow everyone, including our critics, to judge whether the gains observed in the pilot are spreading throughout the system. If they aren’t, we will have to understand why and fix it. If they are, then we
Any result this shocking, deserves to be looked at skeptically. That’s not to say it should be dismissed. On the contrary, it means that it should be studied, tested, and retested. Because if it is indeed a valid conclusion, then my god, this needs to be implemented globally ASAP
Stellar innovation, bringing hope to the children of El Salvador. Don't kid yourself, we need this in at least 70 percent of the public schools in the USA.
Another factor for the success is culture and high expectations. You've changed both radically, and now kids know the high value placed on education by their parents and the President himself! They've internalized this I think.
Well…just read the newest Pisa study and Germany is on a all time low. Literally loosing it. It seems like El Salvador is doing even better than Germany
Thanks for the clarification! We would love to learn more about this in Chile 🇨🇱. Could you please share more about your methods? How teachers and students are using ai, what platforms, frequency, for what subjects, etc. Maybe you could put together a website for us to follow
People can criticize Bukele all they want, but at least he’s actually trying. AI tutors, new schools, tougher curriculum and more discipline could seriously change El Salvador. These two leaders did it last century, and it worked.
This is an excellent clarification! Thank You President Bukele for sharing the information with us and Congratulations on the Pilot Program❤️ We know you want to have very best for the Children of your Country and as someone who loves good education for children myself, I’m
Oh to have leaders who respond thoughtfully and with this kind of clarity of purpose and understanding. Lord help us.

any data on parent involvement in those schools? I was under the assumption that school matters, but parents matter more. I wonder what the data says about that. I hope your program is successful, and the rest of Latam can learn from it.
Once again, Bukele is demonstrating competent leadership that will result in the betterment of his country and it's citizens. You can just do things if you install true leaders.
Incredible to get this depth of understanding and explanation from the president himself. Thank you for your transparency.
This honesty will never be seen in a traditional, party democracy. In American democracy, politicians have an incentive to lie in favor of their policies and not give you actual facts. They oversell and under deliver because they only act to win another election.

It is a very significant advancement for our students; it's something that never crossed my mind, and at my 60 years, I didn't think I would see our children and grandchildren having this great opportunity. Keep going forward, President.
I love you, dude. I look forward to the day the whole of Central America lifts itself up to the standards of El Salvador and Costa Rica. Particularly Honduras, personally. God speed, Señor Presidente 🙏
This guy is systematically transforming every facet of El Salvadorian life 4 the better. I wonder what it would be like to have a leader that was focused on improving the outcomes of his/her people. Ours seem hell bent on spending our $ on unnecessary wars and spreading gambling
You forgot to mention that the teachers conducting those classes aren't specialists in those subjects (math and language), and that classes in Social Studies, Science, English, etc., aren't being taught fully—all in an effort to achieve a good score on the PISA test.
We can tell you used AI to write that post Mr El Presidente. We also can tell your country is still extremely low IQ. But we salute your efforts.
Thank you for taking the time to explain. You had no obligation to do this. More impressed with you and your Country every year.

Always forward, Mr. President, the homeland is built by us, let's go, let's go, we will always make our homeland greater!

Got it, you dumb detractors, know-it-all experts!! Or are they gonna complain because he put it in English!!! XD
Your post presents the AI approach as causative. It fails to (1) discuss selection bias and (2) report test scores for those schools prior to intervention. So ... pseudoscience and propaganda.
This is AI leveling the playing field. The opposite of message pushed on the public. AI is amazing as a teacher, in particular its ability to engage learners 1 on 1 and to provide tuned and targeted knowledge and skill transmission. Its ability to perform medical differential
This is what a pilot is supposed to do: not prove that a model works everywhere, but establish whether it works well enough to justify scaling it. The distinction matters. These 171 schools do not represent El Salvador nationally, and the results do not prove that AI alone
Amazing piece of work! I'm a huge fan with using AI to improve education for kids, and I am building a web application specifically for this. (was for my son initially) I've been trying to find out how you exactly implement the program. What was the software used, the workflows,
bukele writing a stats methodology thread more rigorous than most academic papers, while the people who called it fake haven't run a single school in their lives. teacher attendance jumping to 97% alone should end the debate. thread of the year, part 1 of 2 and still better than
Stunning Results! This is the beginning of an education renaissance! The future of El Salvador lies within the hearts and brains of the children of El Salvador. 🙏🏻🧡
Siga adelante, presidente BUKELE.

Transparency about the scope of the study is key. It's not being said that the entire system has already changed, but rather that there is sufficient evidence to continue testing and expanding the model.
Translated from Spanish
Rather than chasing headlines, what's important is to keep generating data. The pilot provides valuable information, and the expansion will allow us to know if those results can be replicated on a larger scale.
Perhaps the most important result isn't a number. It's what the number makes possible. 171 schools showed that Salvadoran children in ordinary public schools can perform at levels comparable to students in some of the world's most developed countries. Now comes the harder test:
the bank's summary is just a scripted readout, someone in d.c. decided the numbers needed a narrative before anyone saw them
And people keep thinking that it is just access to an IA bot… the whole education system is being transformed and backed up by a great tool… AI
Congratulations, Mr. Bukele. This is the result of a government actually caring for their children. No political indoctrination, not willing to make students lazy or attempting to find shortcuts to gain votes.
This is exactly how progress happens. You try something new, measure the results, learn from what works and what doesn’t, make adjustments, and keep moving forward. The fact that 171 ordinary public schools achieved results once considered impossible for El Salvador is already
