When I’ve read JFV using the term “terra incognita” on Twitter, he has not been claiming that “low fertility/population decline are new/unknown” but that (1) no society on record has been below 1.0 TFR like we see today with South Korea, China, etc., and (2) the effects of a change from say 3.0 to 2.0 TFR cannot tell us anything substantive about the effects of a change from 2.0 to 1.0 TFR. #1 is correct afaik and I think #2 is a reasonable point.

"The main cause of falling fertility globally over the last 200 years has been declining child mortality. Period. Solved."

Can you explain how this theory actually woks? So is it like families want 2-3 surviving kids, so they realize that they need to have 8-10 live births, but now they can just have the number of babies they want? Because it seems very unlikely to me that if today we had a high infant mortality rate, modern people would just be getting pregnant until they had the same number of kids.
